Welcome to 2025 and Season 4 of From a Woman to a Leader!
As the new year begins, so does a new chapter for this podcast, and I couldn’t think of a better way to kick it off than with an extraordinary guest: Emily van Putten. Her journey is one of courage, transformation, and an unwavering commitment to creating change in the tech world.
Emily is not just a cybersecurity expert or DEI advocate; she’s a trailblazer who started in IT without formal experience and climbed her way to leadership roles. Along the way, she discovered her authentic self, embraced vulnerability, and turned her challenges into a platform for inspiring others.
A Story of Beginnings
Emily’s story began with curiosity and a knack for problem-solving. Imagine this: a young Emily building her first computer from spare parts in a drawer beneath her bed. That moment sparked a passion for technology that would define her career.
Her entry into IT wasn’t through a university degree or a planned path—it was through a help desk role, where she learned the ropes by solving technical issues and troubleshooting for others.
“IT is much broader than people think,” Emily said in our conversation. “It’s not just about technical skills; it’s about finding what you enjoy and aligning it with what you’re good at.”
The Leap into Cybersecurity
As Emily progressed in her career, she noticed something troubling: cybersecurity was often treated as an afterthought. While organizations rushed to digitize, security was seen as a “check-the-box” step rather than an integral part of the process.
This realization drove her transition into cybersecurity, where she now works to ensure organizations embed security into their systems by design. But it wasn’t just her technical expertise that set her apart—it was her ability to see the human side of tech.
“Cybersecurity isn’t just about technology,” Emily explained. “It’s about people—their behaviors, their trust in the systems they use, and how those systems impact their lives.”
Redefining Leadership Through Authenticity
One of the most powerful parts of Emily’s story is how her personal journey shaped her leadership. As a transgender woman navigating the male-dominated tech world, she faced challenges that tested her resilience.
Emily shared how transitioning wasn’t just a personal process but also a professional awakening. It taught her the importance of vulnerability, empathy, and building trust.
“Leadership isn’t about control—it’s about creating a space where people feel seen, heard, and valued,” she said.
Her experiences inspired her to lead with authenticity and to challenge the status quo in tech. She believes diverse perspectives aren’t just a nice-to-have—they’re essential for innovation.
Bridging the Gender Gap in Tech
Emily’s advocacy goes beyond her role in cybersecurity. As a board member of Dutch Women in Tech, she’s actively working to empower women and bridge the gender gap in the industry.
One of her most impactful initiatives is a free three-month cybersecurity program for women with little to no background in IT. This program has already helped over 200 women gain the foundational skills and confidence to start careers in cybersecurity.
“We need more diverse voices in tech,” Emily emphasized. “Not just because it’s the right thing to do, but because it leads to better solutions for everyone.”
Lessons for You
Whether you’re looking to break into cybersecurity, grow as a leader, or create more inclusive environments, Emily’s journey offers valuable lessons:
1.Start Where You Are:
You don’t need a perfect resume to begin. Identify what you enjoy and where your strengths lie, and then seek opportunities to align the two.
2.Build Your Network:
Find mentors and allies who can guide and support you. Emily credits much of her growth to conversations with others in the industry.
3.Lead with Empathy:
Whether you’re leading a team or just starting your career, remember that collaboration and trust are key to success.
4.Champion Diversity:
Diversity isn’t just a buzzword—it’s a driver of innovation. Advocate for it, support others, and strive to create workplaces where everyone feels valued.
Why This Matters
Emily’s story is more than inspiring—it’s a call to action. It reminds us that success isn’t about fitting into a mold; it’s about breaking barriers, embracing authenticity, and lifting others as we rise.
