Sheila shares how the US military, a deeply male-dominated space, actually felt more like a meritocracy than her first corporate engineering job. In the Army, no one cared what she looked like. They only cared whether she could fix the generators that kept the lights and heat on.
In corporate life, she was told not to be “so girly” if she wanted to be taken seriously as an engineer. From there, the self-doubt and second-guessing began to creep in.
